imperial tobacco canada - Environment, health and safety

Health & Safety

As the Canadian leader in the sales and distribution of tobacco products, we are committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees and contractors working on our premises. We have an Environment, Health & Safety Policy that aims to apply the best international standards of practice.

We are committed to protecting our people from harm, to mitigating risks and eliminating hazards in the workplace. To that end, all of our Trade Marketing Business activities are certified to OHSAS 18001 (Occupational Health & Safety Assessment Series).

We believe that many workplace injuries can be avoided, and that is up to all to act responsibly toward a safer workplace. Our goal of zero accidents was achieved in 2012. Ever since, we aim to maintain that achievement. We believe that a safe workplace is essential to our continued success.

In our efforts to understand the impact of our business on the natural environment, we continuously monitor and measure the environmental impact of our activities. This enables us to target our efforts towards improving our environmental performance. To that end, we implemented a number of programs, including:

  • Recycling the tobacco product waste at Head Office and various sites nationally, as part of our support of TerraCycle’s Cigarette Waste Brigade;
  • Reducing emissions by using a fleet of hybrid vehicles;
  • Better managing waste through various recycling and composting programs;
  • Implementing water consumption monitoring and reduction initiatives;
  • Endeavours to use less impactful packaging.
